Riemann, Georg Friedrich Bernhard

Német matematikus
1846-1847-ben Göttingenben Johann Listing és Carl Friedrich Gauss tanítványa volt. 1847-1849 között Berlinben Dirichlet, Jacobi, Gotthold Eisenstein és Steiner előadásait hallgatta. 1851-ben védte meg doktori értekezését. 1859-ben lett professzor Göttingenben. Rendkívül eredeti gondolataival a matematika számos ágát vitte termékenyítőleg előre. Az analízisben bevezette a Riemann-integrál fogalmát. Megalapozta a komplex függvénytant, bevezette a Riemann-felületeket. A geometriában a sokdimenziós általános terek elméletét dolgozta ki, a Riemann-geometria az Einstein-féle relativitáselméletben játszik alapvető szerepet. A prímszámok eloszlásának vizsgálatával kapcsolatban az általa definiált Riemann-féle zéta-függvényre vonatkozólag felállította a máig sem bizonyított Riemann-hipotézist, a legfontosabb megoldatlan matematikai problémák egyikét. Munkássága rendkívül nagy hozzájárulás a matematikai analízis fejlődéséhez és nagy hatással volt a modern matematikára.
