Amerikai biokémikus, Nobel-díjas
A Columbia Egyetemen végzett, 1910-ben szerzett Ph. D. fokozatot. 1914-től vezette a rochesteri Mayo Klinika biokémiai osztályát, majd 1921-től harminc éven keresztül a Minnesotai Egyetem élettanprofesszora volt. 1951 után a Princeton Egyetem és a vendégprofesszoraként tevékenykedett. Ő izolálta 1914-ben a tiroxint (pajzsmirigy-hormont),
amely a Banting és Best által előállított inzulin mellett a kialakuló hormonterápia legfontosabb anyaga lett. 1930-tól a mellékvesekéreg hormonjait kutatta. 1944-ben szintézissel előállította a dehidrokortikoszteront és 1946-ban a gyógyászati szempontból fontos kortizont. Philip S. Hench és Tadeus Reichstein társaságában ő kapta az 1950. évi orvosi-élettani Nobel-díjat a mellékvesekéreg-hormonok
szerkezetének és biológiai hatásának tanulmányozásáért.
