Német matematikus, fizikus
Fontos eredményeket ért el a számelméletben, az analízisben és a mechanikában. Rendkívüli tehetsége hamar megmutatkozott. Göttingenben Gauss tanítványa volt. 1827-től breslaui (boroszlói), majd egy évvel később a berlini egyetemen tanított. Gauss halála után elfogadta a göttingeni egyetem meghívását, és a "princeps mathematicorum" (matematikusok fejedelme) utódja lett 1855-ben. Számos, ma az ő nevével megjelölt eredménye volt a matematika jó néhány ágában. Kidolgozta az egészek általános elméletét az algebrai számelméletben.
