Angol fizikus, matematikus
Felismerte a viszkózus folyadékok (róla elnevezett) súrlódási törvényét. Ezenkívül foglalkozott a fény aberrációjával, ebben a témakörben az első fontos munkát végezte. Vizsgálta a gravitáció mértékét a Föld különböző pontjain. A folyadékokban vizsgált ingamozgás a hidrodinamika alapvető anyaga lett, amikor 1851-ben publikálta a viszkozitás törvényét, meghatározva egy kis gömb sebességét viszkózus folyadékban. 1854-ben elméletet dolgozott ki Fraunhofernek a Nap spektrumában észlelt vonalaira.
