A University of Michigan-en, majd a Massachusetts Institute of Technology-n (MIT) tanult. 1941 és 1956 között a Bell Telephone Laboratories-nél dolgozott villamosmérnökként. Az MIT híradástechnikai karán 1956-tól volt vendégprofesszor, majd 1957-től rendes professzor, azonban konzultánsként továbbra is dolgozott a Bell Laboratóriumnak is. A matematikai információelméletet megalapozó könyve, "A kommunikáció matematikai elmélete" 1949-ben jelent meg. Felismerte, hogy az áramkörökben alkalmazott kapcsolók működése a Boole-algebra segítségével írhatók le. Jelentős eredményeket ért el az automaták elméletében, a gráfelméletben, a kriptográfiában. Ő publikálta az első sakkozó programot. Számos fontos fogalom bevezetése fűződik a nevéhez, így a Shannon-entrópia és a Shannon-kapacitás. Tagja volt számos tudományos társaságnak, és sok kitüntetésben, díjban részesült.
