Német születésű amerikai csillagász
Iskoláit Németországban végezte. 1935-ben Göttingenben Ph. D. fokozatot szerzett. 1936-ban elhagyta Németországot. A világ több egyetemén: Osloban, a Harvardon, a Columbia Egyetemen tanított és kutatott. A 2. világháború alatt az Egyesült Államok hadseregében teljesített szolgálatot, majd 1947-től a Princeton egyetemhez csatlakozva végezte kutatói, oktatói munkáját. Legjelentősebb munkája a csillagok fejlődésének modellezése volt. A digitális számítógépek alkalmazásának úttörője. Az 50-es és 60-as években a Stratoscope projekt vezetője volt, ennek során nagy magasságokba juttattak ballonokkal műszereket. Részletes képeket kaptak a Nap granulációjáról és a napfoltokról, valamint a bolygók és a vörös óriáscsillagok infravörös spektrumáról. 1958-ban megjelentette "Structure and Evolution of the Stars" című könyvét. Apja Karl Schwarzschild asztrofizikus volt.
