Noether, Emmy Amalie

Német matematikus, algebrista
Szülővárosa egyetemére járt, ott doktorált algebrából 1907-ben, azonban állást nem kaphatott, mert nőket nem alkalmaztak az egyetemen. 1915-ben Hilbert és Felix Klein hívására Göttingenbe ment, itt fizetés nélkül adott elő. 1919-ben a göttingeni egyetemen magántanárrá habilitált, és előadási jogot szerzett, fizetést azonban csak 1922-től kezdve kapott. 1933-ban a náci rezsim a zsidó származásúakat eltiltotta az oktatástól és a kutatói tevékenységtől. Ezért Emmy Noether is emigrált az Egyesült Államokba, ahol a Bryn Mawr College professzora lett, előadott a Princeton-i Institute for Advanced Study-ban is. 1935-ben egy operáció után halt meg. A modern algebra megalapozói közé tartozott. Őróla nevezték el többek között a Noether-gyűrűket. Az általa bizonyított Noether-tétel a modern fizika egyik legfontosabb alaptétele.
