Amerikai matematikus, közgazdász, Nobel-díjas
Pittsburgh-ben, a Carnegie Mellon University-n szerezte BSc és MSc diplomáit matematikából. Ezután a Princeton Egyetemen tanult; 1950-ben a nem kooperatív játékelmélet témakörben írt dolgozata által kapta meg a PhD fokozatot. Ezt az eredményt később Nash-egyensúlynak nevezték el. Témavezetője Albert W. Tucker volt (akinek további világhírű tanítványai például Marvin Minsky, Lloyd Shapley, Harold W. Kuhn). A Nash-féle beágyazási tétel szerint minden Riemann-sokaság izometrikusan beágyazható a megfelelő euklideszi térbe. Nash munkássága kiterjedt a nemlineáris parabolikus parciális differenciálegyenletekre és az algebrai geometriára is. Betegsége miatt évtizedekig nem tudott alkotni; ezt a nehéz időszakot az Egy csodálatos elme című többszörösen Oscar- és Golden Globe-díjazott film örökítette meg. A játékelmélet terén elért kiemelkedő eredményeiért 1994-ben (Harsányi Jánossal és Reinhard Seltennel megosztva) megkapta a közgazdasági Nobel-díjat, 2015-ben pedig Abel-díjat nyert (Louis Nirenberggel megosztva).
