1696-ban kiadta az első differenciálszámítással foglalkozó tankönyvet. Ez és egy későbbi, analitikus geometriáról szóló könyve a 18. század nagy részében mérvadónak számított. Az első könyv tartalmazza a l'Hospital-szabályt, melyet Johann Bernoulli-nak, tanárának tulajdonítanak, aki állítólag beleegyezett abba, hogy anyagi támogatás fejében az eredményeit ismerteti l'Hospital márkival.
