Francia matematikus
Apja nyomdász volt, aki korán meghalt. Kiváló tanulóként ösztöndíjat kapott, így be tudta fejezni tanulmányait. Először vidéki egyetemeken tanított, majd 1912-ben a párizsi Collège de France professzora lett. 1922-ben a francia, 1924-ben pedig az angol akadémia választotta tagjának.
Borel, Baire, Jordan és Peano munkásságára támaszkodva 1901-ben bevezette a Lebesgue-mérték és erre építve a Lebesgue-integrál fogalmát, amely a modern analízis egyik legfontosabb fogalma.
Riesz Frigyes az elsők között volt a Lebesgue-integrál fogalmának továbbfejlesztői között.
