Galle, Johann Gottfried

Német csillagász
A Berlini Csillagvizsgáló munkatársa, 1835 és 1851 között igazgatóhelyettese volt J.F. Encke mellett. A Szaturnusz gyűrűit tanulmányozta, később sikeresnek bizonyult módszert javasolt a Naprendszer méretének mérésére a kisbolygók parallaxisának meghatározásával. A Neptunuszt Urbain Le Verrier francia csillagász kérésére kereste, aki kiszámította a bolygó valószínű helyzetét, mielőtt még megpillantották volna. 1846. szeptember 23-án elsőként észlelte a Neptunusz bolygót. 1851-től 1897-ig a breslaui (ma Wroclaw, Lengyelország) csillagvizsgáló igazgatója volt.
