Francia matematikus, fizikus
A függvények trigonometrikus sorbafejtésével hathatós eszközt biztosított a fizika differenciálegyenleteinek megoldásához. Munkássága az analízis egy új ágának kialakulásához és a függvényfogalom általánosításához vezetett. 1807-ben mutatta be az akadémián a hővezetés differenciálegyenletét tartalmazó dolgozatát. 1822-ben publikálta A hővezetés matematikai elmélete című klasszikus művét. Két évvel később az akadémia tagja és titkára lett. A Fourier-sorok és a Fourier transzformáció ma már nélkülözhetetlen eszközei a matematikai fizika parciális differenciálegyenleteinek megoldásában. Rájuk épül az ún. harmonikus analízis. Dirichlet belőlük kiindulva adta meg a függvény ma is elfogadott definícióját. A Fourier-analízis témakörét a magyar matematikusok (Fejér Lipót, Riesz Frigyes) is intenzíven kutatták.
Neve ott van a hetvenkét francia tudós között az Eiffel-tornyon.
