Olasz matematikus, csillagász
Eredeti neve Giovanni Francesco Melchiore Salvemini volt. Pisában folytatott matematikai tanulmányai után Svájcba ment, ott változtatott nevet, felvette szülővárosa nevét. Lausanne-ban és Bernben tanított, majd 1751-ben Utrechtbe ment, itt tanított 1764-ig, 1755-től mint professzor. 1764-től Berlinben élt, ahol 1765-ben királyi csillagász lett. Foglalkozott a kúpszeletekkel, és tüzérségi problémákkal. Cramerrel együttműködve publikálta Leonhard Euler és Johann Bernoulli levelezését. Ő adott nevet a kardioid görbének. 1763-ban a londoni Royal Society tagja lett.
