Svájci matematikus
Jómódú kereskedőcsaládban született. Johann Bernoulli bátyja. Teológiát tanult, apja akarata ellenére képezte magát matematikában. Magántanítás és tanulmányutak után 1687-ben meghívták a baseli egyetem matematika tanszékére, melyet haláláig vezetett. A tanszéket halála után öccse, Johann vette át. Testvérével, Johann-nal együtt korának egyik legjelentősebb és legnagyobb hatású matematikusa volt. Jelentős szerepe volt a matematikai analízis és a valószínűségszámítás megalapozásában. Ő fogalmazta meg a nagy számok törvényét. Matematikai bizonyítási módszerré ő fejlesztette a teljes indukciót. Nagy művét "Ars conjectandi" címmel halála után unokaöccse, Nicolaus I Bernoulli adta ki. A matematikában számos fogalom kapcsolódik a nevéhez, így a Bernoulli-eloszlás, a Bernoulli-számok, a Bernoulli-egyenlőtlenség és még sok más fogalom. Öccsével, Johannal folytatott vitája vezetett a variációszámítás megalapozásához.
